Portable air conditioners

Compare room suitability, noise, electrical input and practical ventilation before choosing a unit for a US home.

Choose capacity for the room

Portable air conditioners move heat outside through an exhaust hose. Measure the room, account for sun and glazing, and check that the window can accept a well-fitted vent arrangement.

Calculate your BTU range

Understand electricity and noise

BTU/h describes cooling output; watts describe electrical input. Use the rated watts with your own electricity rate for a conservative cost illustration. For bedrooms, compare the published minimum and maximum sound figures on the same basis.

Portable is not always the best route

For regular multi-room cooling, heating and quieter indoor operation, a professionally installed split system may be more suitable. Renters should check permissions and safe window security.
