Editorial note

This guide is independent general information. It contains no invented testing or customer-review claims. Product suitability and installation requirements depend on the property.

Build the whole-cost table

Put every offer into the same table: equipment price, installation, activation, required monitoring, video storage, cellular backup, permits, taxes and any recurring app or cloud fee. A low equipment price can be tied to a longer service commitment, while a higher upfront price may leave more flexibility.

Record who owns each camera, sensor, hub and control panel after the agreement ends. Also ask whether professionally installed devices can be reused with another monitoring company or become limited when the subscription stops.

Audit the exit before the entry

Read the initial term, automatic-renewal language, cancellation notice method, early-termination formula, trial or return period, relocation policy and what happens when the home is sold. Do not assume an online checkout, an in-home sale and a store purchase have identical cancellation rights.

The FTC says its Cooling-Off Rule can cover certain sales made at a home or away from a seller’s permanent business location, but exclusions apply. Keep the dated contract and cancellation forms, and verify any additional state protection with the state attorney general rather than treating a general guide as legal advice.

Compare service, privacy and failure modes

Document whether monitoring is professional, self-monitored or optional; who receives alarms; whether police or fire dispatch requires local registration; and how the system behaves during internet or power loss. Compare battery backup, cellular fallback and replacement responsibilities using written terms.

For cameras and smart locks, review account security, user permissions, recording retention, deletion controls and third-party integrations. A useful comparison separates security functions from convenience features and avoids declaring one brand universally best.
