Measure hot-water demand
Household size alone does not describe simultaneous showers, large tubs, laundry and dishwashing. Compare first-hour delivery or peak flow using the same demand assumptions.
A smaller efficient unit that cannot meet peak needs is not a successful upgrade.
Check the installation path
Fuel, venting, electrical capacity, condensate, drainage, seismic requirements and equipment location can change the project.
Heat-pump water heaters also need appropriate surrounding air volume, temperature, sound and condensate planning.
Compare lifecycle cost
Add equipment, labor, energy, maintenance, warranty and financing. Tankless descaling and storage-tank anode or flushing needs should be visible.
Confirm current federal, state and utility program rules before including incentives in the budget.
