What EIA measured

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported on September 3 that average hourly electricity load in ERCOT reached 74.5 gigawatts for the week ending August 22, 2026. EIA describes that as a weekly record. The following week averaged 73.7 GW, just below it. All six weeks from the week ending July 25 through August 29 were above the previous weekly record of 70.0 GW set in 2023.

This is measured grid load for ERCOT, the system operator serving most of Texas. It is not a household consumption average, a retail electricity price, an outage forecast or a statement about every Texas utility territory. EIA attributes persistently high demand in part to sustained high temperatures. Its underlying Hourly Electric Grid Monitor aggregates system-level operating data; it does not identify why one home's bill changed.

Do not translate a grid record directly into your bill

A household bill is usually the product of metered kilowatt-hours and the specific plan's energy, delivery, fixed and other permitted charges. A high-load week may coincide with heavy air-conditioning use, but it does not reveal the rate on your Electricity Facts Label, the billing dates, whether a minimum-use or time-varying provision applies, or how much of the home's load came from HVAC. Compare the current bill with the same billing period last year using daily kWh when billing-cycle lengths differ.

Start with four numbers: billing days, total kWh, total amount due and the all-in amount divided by kWh. Then separate supply and delivery charges and note plan thresholds. A higher total with roughly unchanged all-in cents per kWh points mainly toward more use; a higher all-in rate with similar use points toward price or fee changes. Both can occur together. Use the record as a prompt for an HVAC evidence check

If cooling use appears to be the driver, avoid jumping from a high bill to equipment replacement. Record thermostat schedule, indoor temperature and humidity, outdoor conditions, filter condition, run behavior and room imbalance. Compare those observations with prior periods. Safe homeowner checks can identify an obvious blocked return or dirty accessible filter, but refrigerant, electrical and internal equipment work belongs to a qualified technician.

Ask a technician to document the system's operating condition and measurements rather than promise a savings percentage. If replacement is proposed, compare the home load assumption, exact matched equipment, ducts and airflow, electrical and permit scope, commissioning, warranties, cash total and financed total. Equipment efficiency alone cannot determine the bill because weather, envelope, controls, occupancy and the actual tariff remain material inputs.

Build a heat and power plan without fake urgency

A record already observed on the grid does not establish that an emergency or outage is imminent. For current system conditions, use ERCOT and the serving utility's official channels. Keep utility contact details, a safe air-conditioned destination and plans for vulnerable household members and powered medical equipment available before extreme heat. Never advertise contractor availability, electricity-plan savings or backup-power performance unless each is verified for the address and use case.

For future decisions, preserve the bill period, tariff documents and HVAC evidence together. Treat its outputs as planning estimates: change the electricity rate, cooling hours and equipment efficiency yourself, and keep measured use separate from forecast assumptions. That makes the grid record useful context without turning it into a claim about one household.
